Jag är Ulf Långbacka, verksam som dirigent och kompositör samt som lärare i musikvetenskap vid Åbo Akademi. Jag har komponerat musik för körer, orkester, för små ensembler samt för projekt av olika slag. Exempel på större projekt är operan Henrik och Häxhammaren, som framfördes 2011 på slottsgården i Åbo slott av en ensemble på ca 60 personer inom ramen för Åbos europeiska kulturhuvudstadsår, och kantaten Undrans mosaik för kör, elektronik, solister och en instrumentalensemble; som uruppfördes i samband med Åbo Akademis 100- årsjubileum år 2018.
Som dirigent för studentkörerna Brahe Djäknar och Florakören sedan 1991 har jag haft stora möjligheter att kombinera skapande och framförande musikerskap. På senare tid har jag i flere verk intresserat mig för kombinationer av akustiska instrument, röster och elektronik – möjligheten att skapa hittils ohörda klangkombinationer är lockande och fascinerande.
Inom projektet Avtryck i det okända samarbetar jag med forskardoktor och marinbiolog Anna Törnroos-Remes som forskar i havet, dess mångfald av djur och växter. Hur kan musikaliskt uttryck hjälpa till med att öka medvetenheten om vad som håller på att ske med vårt hav? Hur kan forskningsresultat – som diagram, inspelade ljud från havsbottnen och andra uttryck för forskning inspirera till konstnärligt skapande? Vilka möjligheter till ömsesidig inspiration, och korsbefruktning kan vi ytterligare hitta inom projektet?
Vår gemensamma process har börjat och jag ser fram emot en inspirerande upptäcksfärd i gränszonen mellan konst och vetenskap.

My name is Ulf Långbacka. In addition to my work as a conductor and composer, I teach musicology at Åbo Akademi. I have composed music for choirs, orchestra, smaller ensembles of various kinds as well as for different projects. One of the bigger projects are Henrik och Häxhammaren, which was presented by an ensemble consisting of about 60 people in the yard of Turku Castle in 2011, within the official program of Turku as a cultural capital. Another big project was the cantata Undrans mosaik for choir, electronics, solo and an instrumetal ensemble, which premiered at the 100-year anniversary of Åbo Akademi.
Conducting the student choirs Brahe Djäknar och Florakören since 1991 have given me great opportunities to combine the creative and performing aspects of musicianship. Lately I have been exploring different combinations of acoustic instruments, voices and electronics – the opportunity to create different tonal combinations is inviting and fascinating.
Within Forcing the Impossible, I collaborate with the doctoral researcher and marine biologist Anna Törnroos-Remes. She researches the sea, and the diversity of animal and plant life in it. How can musical expression help increase our awareness of what is happening with our sea? How can research date – like diagrams, sounds recorded from the bottom of the sea and other research groundwork inspire artistic creativity? What possibilities to mutual inspiration and other cross-fertilization can we find within the frames of the project?
Our common process has begun, and I look forward to an inspiring exploration on the borders of art and science.
