I am Marjan Raar, I’m a Dutch citizen, and I live and work in Finland.
The most important things in my life are my family and friends. Despite being spread out over the world, we often happily meet up in the Netherlands.
I’m a professional dancer and choreographer and I am one of the establishing members of Barker-theatre in Turku. I really love my work.
I am a dance artist and I graduated from de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Amsterdam as a professional dancer and choreographer.
As a freelance dance-maker I perform and stage most of my works in Finland and at times even abroad. As a dance artist I have a profound interest in people, bodies, our behaviors, rhythm, communication, awareness of space, chaos and questions. I suppose I could say that I’m a moving abstract urban storyteller.
In this project I cooperate with Minority studies, in particularly Pamela Slotte and Leónardo Custódio. Within the theme of Forcing the Impossible we are working on a performance that tackles issues of today’s world and human behaviours.
ECHOES is a choreography in cooperation with Minority Studies at Åbo Akademi.
All the participants of this project are in one way or another belonging to a minority group in Finland. As a group we worked with personal emotions and feelings that came up by working with the theme of “ belonging” and transformed the material into dance.
The texts in the piece has been formed throughout the process by actor Bror Österlund:
“The social pain, I feel it in my chest, in my head, I feel it in my body.”

Jag är Marjan Raar, en holländsk medborgare som lever och arbetar i Finland.
Det viktigaste i mitt liv är min familj och mina vänner. Trots att vi är spridda världen över, sammanstrålar vi ofta samman i Nederländerna.
Jag är professionell dansare och koreograf och är en av dem grundat Barker-teatern i Åbo. Jag älskar verkligen mitt jobb.
Jag är danskonstnär och utexaminerades från de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten i Amsterdam som professionell dansare och koreograf.
Som freelance-dansare sätter jag upp och uppträder med föreställningar i Finland, ibland även utomlands. Som danskonstnär är jag oändligt intresserad av människor, kroppar, beteenden, rytmer, kommunikation, medvetenhet om utrymmen, kaos och frågor. Jag antar att jag kunde kalla mig en rörlig abstrakt urban berättare.
I det här projektet samarbetar jag med minoritetsstudier, speciellt Pamela Slotte och Leónardo Custódio. Inom temat för Avtryck i det Okända arbetar vi på en föreställning som tar upp frågor i dagens värld och mänskliga beteende:
“Den sociala smärtan känns i bröstet, den känns i huvudet, den känns i kroppen.”
