RESEARCHER PRESENTATION: Cecilia Sahlgren

Jag bor och jobbar i Åbo i Finland och i Eindhoven i Holland. Jag har bott i Helsingfors, Borgå, Nagu, Pargas, Åbo, Korpo, Stockholm, Ulm och Eindhoven. Jag är rastlös men inte rotlös och mina fötter slår rot på klippor nära havet, och jag återvänder alltid till Åbolands skärgård. Jag har varit gift en gång och har tre barn. Jag ställer frågor om livet på molekylär nivå och forskar i biomedicin. Jag är professor i cellbiologi vid Åbo Akademi och professor i biomedicinsk teknologi i Holland(http://cellfatelab.github.io/highlights/) och är intresserad av livets byggklossar, cellerna, som är så små att man inte ser dem utan mikroskop. Jag är speciellt intresserad av hur celler gör komplexa beslut i kroppen och hur dessa beslut påverkar vår hälsa. Hur gör cellerna oss sjuka och vad gör cellerna för att reparera skador i kroppen?

MIN FORSKNING

Jag startade min egen forskningsgrupp 2009 vid Åbo Biovetenskapscentrum efter att jag gjort en ”post doc” på Karolinska Institutet i Sverige. 2013 blev jag professor i Holland, men fortsatte att pendla mellan Finland och Holland. 2016 blev jag professor i Cellbiologi vid Åbo Akademi, fick igen en finsk adress och ett FPA kort. Jag fortsätter att pendla men nu åt andra hållet. Idag leder jag en forskningsgrupp med 26 forskare i två länder. Vi gör tvärvetenskaplig forskning där vi försöker förstå hur cellerna gör beslut och när vi förstår det utvecklar vi smarta biomaterial tillsammans med smarta materialutvecklare för att kunna styra dessa beslut. Vi har utvecklat nanopartiklar med cellstoppare för att bota cancer och biostrukturer med cellaktiverare för att reparera vävnader som gått sönder.

Nu beskriver och diskuterar jag min nyfikenhet, livets processer och hur man kan reparera skadade hjärtan för silverkonstnär Ru Runeberg och animatör Antonia Ringbom.

I work and live in Turku, Finland and Eindhoven, Holland. I have lived in Helsinki, Borgå, Nagu, Pargas, Turku, Korpo, Stockholm, Ulm and Eindhoven. I’m restless but not rootless; my feet seem to settle on cliffs close to the sea, and I always return to the Turku archipelago. I have been married once and have three children. I pose questions about life on a molecular level while researching bio medicine. I’m a professor in cell biology at Åbo Akademi University and professor in biomedical technology in Holland (http://cellfatelab.github.io/highlights/). I’m interested in the building bricks of life, the cells – so small that they are indistinguishable without microscope. I’m particularly interested in how cells make complex decisions in the body, and how these decisions affect our health. How do cells make us sick, and what do they do in order to repair damage in the body?

MY RESEARCH
I started my own research group at Turku Bioscience after my post doc at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden. In 2013, I became a professor in Holland, but continued to travel between there and Finland. In 2016, I became professor in cell biology at Åbo Akademi University, and once more had a Finnish address and a Finnish social security card. I still travel, but now with Finland as a base. Today I’m leading a research group of 26 researchers in two countries. We do interdisciplinary research in our attempts in order to understand how cells make their decisions. When we do gain understanding, we develop intelligent biomaterials together with smart material developers in order to be able to direct the decision making. We have developed nano particles with cell stoppers in order to cure cancer, and biostructures with cell activators which repairs broken tissue.
Now I describe my curiosity, life processes and how it is possible to repair damaged hearts to silver artist Ru Runeberg and animator Antonia Ringbom, and discuss it with them.
